First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. First edition. Ninth printing, 1947. Inscribed on the half-title page: "For John S. Hodgson, with personal regards, Rutherford Platt, June 1949." Uncommon signed in any edition and printing. With a background in publishing and advertising, Rutherford Platt became keenly interested in the natural world and especially in nature photography after taking classes at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. This Green Worldis his first book and itwon the John Burroughs Medal for natural history writing in 1945. The jacket describes the book this way: "This Green World has boiled over from the great of a ma who missed trees and flowers through his school days and early business years. It is a gentle protest against the conventional education that ignores these dynamic subjects; it is designed to open the eyes of the reader to the drama of color and form and the mechanical wonders in the landscape around us." It also posits that he was "the first non-professional naturalist to win [the John Burroughs] award since its establishment in 1921." Small quarto or large octavo in green cloth, photographic endpapers (of a tree), with black and white macro botanical and landscape photographs by Platt throughout, as well as illustrations based on his photos. The book is divided into two parts: "Trees" and "Flowers." With a "What to Read" appendix and index. A near fine book with one spot of light soiling to spine. Lacking the dust jacket, or rather its remains are laid in, only the panels, no spine. A dust jacket on this book appears to be scarce and currently unobtainable.
