Juli 1926 Göttingen), deutscher Mediziner, Chirurg. Nach ihm werden die Madelung-Deformität sowie der Morbus Madelung (Madelung-Fetthals) benannt. Studium ab 1865 Medizin in Bonn, Berlin und Tübingen, Promotion 1868/1869. Er praktizierte an der Heilanstalt in Siegburg, im Reservelazarett in Diez an der Lahn, 1871 als Assistenzarzt bei Karl David Wilhelm Busch (1826-1881) an der Chirurgischen Universitätsklinik Bonn. Hier habilitierte er sich 1873 und arbeitete dann unter Leitung von Georg Eduard Rindfleisch (1836-1909). Ab 1874 weilte er in England und den USA. 1879 kehrte er nach Bonn zurück. 1881 wurde er außerordentlicher Professor und ab 1882 ordentlicher Professor und Direktor der Chirurgischen Universitätsklinik in Rostock und 1894 in Straßburg Nachfolger von Georg Albert Lücke. *** Original contribution. - First description of the diffuse symmetrical lipomatosis with preference for the neck area (Madelung fat neck). - Otto Wilhelm Madelung (born May 15, 1846 Gotha, July 22, 1926 Göttingen), German doctor, surgeon. The Madelung deformity and the Madelung disease (Madelung fat cells) are named after him. Studied medicine in Bonn, Berlin and Tübingen from 1865, doctorate in 1868/1869. He practiced at the Heilanstalt in Siegburg, in the reserve hospital in Diez an der Lahn, in 1871 as an assistant physician to Karl David Wilhelm Busch (1826-1881) at the surgical university clinic in Bonn. Here he habilitated in 1873 and then worked under the direction of Georg Eduard Rindfleisch (1836-1909). From 1874 he stayed in England and the USA. In 1879 he returned to Bonn. In 1881 he became an associate professor and from 1882 full professor and director of the surgical university clinic in Rostock, and in 1894 in Strasbourg he succeeded Georg Albert Lücke.
