First Edition
Decorative Boards. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. David Eccles (illustrator). First Edition. Hardback. First Edition. The War and Uncle Walter. Very slight wear to top coprner of D/J. The wartime diaries of Walter Musto were recently discovered by his great-nephew in a family attic. Contained in a dusty pile of notebooks filled with neat handwriting are the intimate thoughts of a sixty-year-old civil servant living in Surrey during the Second World War. In the spirit of The Dairy of a Nobody, with more than an echo of Dad's Army, Walter's mix of social commentary and personal concerns offers an idiosyncratic view of life on the suburban front. When Walter took up his diary on January 1st, 1939, he was looking forward to retirement and spending more time in his garden. He lived modestly with his beloved wife Alice Mary and their ageing dog Nell. Walter was too old to fight, but he organized his ARP fire-watch unit and, spurred on by the cry of 'Dig for victory', grew mountains of vegetables for the war effort. He also took up weaving and knitted scarves for the beighbourhood. Walter displays a lively intellectual life in his diary but he also loved being outdoors. Nothing gave him more pleasure than pottering in his greenhouse or sunbathing in the nude among the flowers, interrupted only by the wailing of an air-raid siren or plain bad weather. By turns flowery, pompous, touching and opinionated, Walter's precise prose may come from a phrasebook long discarded, but his words still jump off the page, capturing the infomitable spirit that helped England endure the hardships of the Blitz. This charming diary is a welcome reminder that not all wars are fought on the front line. Illustrations. 310 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
