Hardcover. Condition: NF. Dust Jacket Condition: NF. Photos, Maps (illustrator). 1st. No war is ever popular, but the degree to which Australian public opinion was divided over its part in Vietnam is indicated by the author's note stating his book was "Dedicated to the Australian men and women --- and their families --- who fought this politicians' war." Whatever their individual feelings about this conflict, 50, 000 members of the Aussie defence forces, regulars and conscripts, served there, 521 were dead , killed in action, died of wounds or in accidents, and about 3000 were wounded. The major commitment by far was from the Australian army and Ham's book inevitably deals mainly with the waging of the ground war in which these soldiers adopted tactics which were very different from thier American contemporaries, particularly in the conduct of jungle operations in which many of their officers were familiar, using stealth, deception and a greater degree of restraint. Certainly few, if any, other books have dealt more comprehensively with Australia's military commitment to this conflict. The book is objective and unrelenting in dispensing criticism where it was required, and particularly with political aspects. Vietman was to be Australia's longest war and Paul Ham has throughly examined each aspect of the actual conflict, then turning to a detailed study of its aftermath --- including the medical, psychological and moral impact it had on returning veterans, who were for years regarded with hostility by many citizens and denied the honour and respect that had been accorded to those returning from earlier wars. It would be many years before their service was given positive recognition. If the mission was misguided, responsibility for that rested with the political masters, not those who fought and died as had Australians of previous generations. Paul Ham's fine book will be regarded as one of the best single volume histories of the Vietman War. First edition , 2007 from HarperCollins, 814 pages including four appendices, endnotes, bibliography and index, 59 b/w photographs in three collations, seven maps, colour e/papers. Green hard covers with sliver spine titles NF, ditto the yext block, no inscriptions, DJ is also NF. This heavy book (1.5kgs unpacked) would require additional postage for internation delivery.
