First Edition
Hard covers, no dust jacket. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st edition. Inscribed by the editor on ffep. A remarkable document prepared by Spenser while serving in Ireland; none too complimentary in parts, it constitutes an eye-witness account of the state of late 16th century Ireland in the form of a dialogue between Eudox and Iren. The language is of Shakespearian vintage and is thus a little obscure in places. About a third of the book is taken up with the editor?s Commentary, with extensive end-notes. Weight: 1 Language: English.

"Spencer's only prose work, 'a dialogue discussing the brutal measures needed to establish a stable colonial regime in the country' (DLB), where he spent most of the last 20 years of his life as a civil servant and landowner. After remarrying to the curate of St. Werburgh's, Dublin the bookseller the Reverend Stewart Lynch, she was "known from then on as Mrs. Lynch [and] continued to operate her bookselling and lending business from 6 Skinner Row.
