Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. J S Goodall (illustrator). 1st Edition. SIGNED WITHOUT INSCRIPTION "Best wishes - Dora Saint (Miss Read)" on the dedication page, owner's name written below the author's signature, "Eileen Bassett. Headmistress of Beedon (Fairacre School) 1960". The Beedon C of E school is in Newbury, Berkshire, near to where Dora Saint aka Miss Read lived, so the two were undoubtedly acquainted and it would seem that the Beedon school was the model for the Fairacre school in the novel. This is the second of the author's celebrated Fairacre Village novels, there is light wear only to the purple boards with gilt titles on the spine, mild rubbing of the corners and head/foot of spine where there are small instances of sunning, edges tanned but text pages are clean, mild toning on part of the illustrated end papers. Illustrated dust jacket not lipped, has edge war with chipping including a 6 x 2cm section of paper loss at the top of the front cover, some sunning and shelf dirt to spine and rear cover, which is illustrated with precis' and illustrations of the author's four previous adult books, 1cm closed tear bottom corner of rear cover. Grading commensurate with age of book. Dispatched from the UK same or next working day. NB: Due to the utter stupidity of Brexit, parcels sent to the EU may incur customs charges. Signed by Author.
