Contemporary calf, rebacked to style, with title labels, lightly rubbed. Two old photographs pasted in at the beginning of volume two and three.Second edition (first 1832). Richard Lander, the only survivor of the Clapperton expedition, together with his younger brother John undertook a mission in 1830 to explore the course and termination of the Niger River. They travelled from Cape Coast Castle to Acra, Bogádry, Boussa (Bussa), and further to Yaoorie. Returning to Boussa, they began their descent of the river in canoes, and after some mishaps they eventually reached the mouth of the Niger. Richard was awarded a gold medal upon his return. In 1854 Baikie joined the British Niger expedition as a surgeon and naturalist. Under his command the steamship Pleiad traversed more than two hundred and fifty miles up the Niger of previously uncharted water. His account includes information about the natural history, commerce, the different tribes and their customs. The appendix is about how Baikie discovered the use of quinine to prevent malaria fever.

Bertrand was a Swiss geographer and photographer who made many ethnographical trips around the world. This account is about a journey to the Barotseland and the Zambezi basin, today located in western Zambia. Bertand's account based on his diary describes the different places he visited, its people, and hunting experiences of buffalo, wildebeest and lion. Jean Dupuis (1828-1912) was a French merchant who was very active seeking a trading route between Yunnan and the delta of Tonkin via the Red River. His account explains the difficulties with customs and the controversies and fights with the Black Flag Army who helped the Vietnamese government to defeat the French. In 1881 Dupuis was awarded the Delalande Guérineau prize by the Academy of Sciences in Paris. ("Mémoires de la Société Académique Indo-Chinoise de Paris. Tome deuxième"). Cordier BI 2518-9.

Lithographed board game (48 x 48 cm). Hand-coloured and printed in green and black on four cardboard panels pasted on green cloth, with Bordeaux red mauve patterned paper on reverse, slightly rubbed. Housed in the original mauve patterned paper covered box (small loss of label). Printed rules inside the lid. Some staining to front cover and the lower cover has been nicely restored. The game offers various routes via balloon, railway, overland or sea voyage, along a grid to the exotic and mysterious city of Peking in the centre. The design of the grid strikingly resembles Chinese city maps of the period. Ornamented with beautiful hand-coloured vignettes in the corners. A well-preserved game published just after the Second Opium War.

In 1772 Anders Sparrman, a Swedish naturalist, travelled around the Cape Province for several years and in this account he reports about the plants, animals and inhabitants of the country. While he was there he was invited to participate in Cook's second voyage in the Resolution as assistant to the Forsters, the botanists on the expedition. First edition of Wansleben's narrative of his second journey to Egypt. Johann Michael Wansleben was a German theologian and linguist. In 1670 in the service of Jean-Baptist Colbert he planned a new journey to Ethiopia, but once again went no further than Egypt. He travelled extensively in Egypt for about a year and came as far south as Sohag. His account is one of the earliest of Upper Egypt. This informative account describes the customs of the people along the route, commerce and navigation, and about the Arabic influence in India. Grandpré was also very much concerned with the European influence in the area, especially concerning the French at Pondichery, India. Paul Lucas was a French merchant, naturalist and antiquary who made three journeys to the Levant. He brought back a vast collection of antiquities such as medals and manuscripts to king Louis XV's cabinet. This is the account of the third voyage made between 1714 and 1717. He visited Constantinople, Syria, the Holy Land and Egypt. The beautiful plates depict the Galata tower, the city of Tyre, the ancient theatre of Sagalassar, Damascus, the Mikias at Cairo, the Great Pyramids, flora and fauna, antiquities, etc. "Many commentators have criticised Lucas for the often fabulous nature of his accounts, but his writings convey a vivd sense of the nature of the East, laced with considerable classical erudition" (Blackmer) Atabey 733. First edition.Ferrieres-Sauveboeuf was a French diplomat who for many years travelled throughout the Levant, Persia, Arabia and Caucasia including several visits to Constantinople. He was fluent in Turkish and Persian. His account is rich with information of the countries, people, characters, religion, etc. and mainly based on his own observations. Further he records much details about the Turkish-Russian war of 1788-9. He was engaged to undertake secret missions in the area under the ministry of Vergennes who earlier had been French ambassador to the Porte (from 1755). It might explain his loyalty to Vergennes and the vitriolic attacks against Comte de Choiseul Gouffier who was the ambassador in Constantinople at the time (1784-91). Atabey 428 (second ed.). Goldsmiths 14021.Carl Bernard Wadström (1746?99), known as the Swedish philanthropist and Swedenborgian who was involved in the British abolitionist movement. In 1787 the Swedish King Gustav III sent Wadström, together with two other Swedes (Carl Axel Arrhenius and Anders Sparrman) to Guinea to investigate the possibility of establishing a Swedish West African colony. Upon Wadström's return he stayed in England to attend a Swedenborgian conference and was drawn into the ongoing English antislavery campaign. He published this work and "An Essay on Colonization" (1794-5) in which he exposed the cruelties of slavery and claimed that the Africans were worth more as trading partners and wage labourers than as slaves. It deals with the Russian embassy headed by Everard Isbrand Ides which went overland from Moscow to Peking, written by the secretary of the embassy, Adam Brand. The aim of the expedition was to conclude commercial agreements with the Chinese but, in fact, this was not achieved. The journal describes the Siberian tribes encountered along the route and writes vividly about the visit to China including the embassy's reception in Peking. "His eyewitness reports of the temples visited, the dust on Peking streets, the negotiations with Chinese officials, the official banquets he attended, and so forth, are his most important contributions to Europe's knowledge about Asia" (Lach). Includes a table "des chiffres de la carte" (pp. 183-92) with numbers of cities and other places passed along the route, indicated on the map. The map only to be found in this edition. Philippe Avril, Jesuit professor of philosophy and mathematics at Paris, was summoned by Father Ferdinand Verbiest in Peking to join the mission there. For eight years, from 1682 to 1690, Avril travelled overland reaching North and Northwest China but ultimately failing to reach Peking. This narrative covers both journeys; the first by caravan through Syria, Kurdistan, Armenia, Persia and across the Caspian to Astrakan where he had to turn back, and the second about his attempt to cross Siberia from Moscow to China, with his return to the West through Constantinople, Moldavia, Poland and Lithuania. Avril's narrative is based on earlier Jeusit reports but also on new information given to him by caravan travellers and rulers he met en route, in particular the king of Syria. Cordier BS 2088. It is mainly recognised for the lovely illustrations made after his drawings. He visited the Samoyedic country, Moscow, Astrakhan, Siberia, Isfahan, Persepolis, Garmeroon, Cochin in India, and Batavia and Bantam in Indonesia. Of particular interest is De Brujn's description of the Samoyedic people, one of the earliest, and the account with illustrations of Persepolis.
