First of the Edition, Limited and Signed by Fritz Kredel. With the original letter announcing and describing the publication of the book included. With over thirty hand-coloured drawings by Fritz Kredel throughout. 8vo, publisher's original quarter blue silk finished linen over boards, lettered in gilt on the spine and pictorially decorated in navy on both covers. Housed in the original blue slipcase. 261 pp. A fine copy, as pristine, with a bit of mellowing only to the slipcase. FIRST OF THE EDITION. George Orwell called the novel "probably the most successful" of Trollope's "clerical series", and "one of his best works". 'The Warden concerns Mr Septimus Harding, the meek, elderly warden of Hiram's Hospital and precentor of Barchester Cathedral, in the fictional county of Barsetshire. The story concerns the impact upon Harding and his circle when a zealous young reformer, John Bold, launches a campaign to expose the disparity in the apportionment of the charity's income between its object, and its officer, Mr Harding. John Bold embarks on this campaign in a spirit of public duty despite his romantic involvement with Eleanor and previously cordial relations with Mr Harding. Bold starts a lawsuit and Mr Harding is advised by the indomitable Dr Grantly, his son-in-law, to stand his ground.

Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Thus. Signed by Ilustrator Hard Cover. 'The Warden' is one of the great classics written by Anthony Trollope. It is a pleasant story about British ecclesiastical life in the time of Queen Victoria. It is a novel of domestic realism and the amiable style of the novel fits the leisurely existence it describes. A wonderful read! This is the centennial edition of The Warden. Only 1500 copies were printed in 1955 of which this is number 946. The book is in beautiful condition with a small pencil point size white spot on the outside extreme of the front board and near the top and a couple of very small and almost invisible spots below the illustration on the front board. There is very slight sunning to the spine and it is hard to see, The slipcase shows just a bit of wear with moderate sunning of the spine and some sunning to the perimimeter of the box, front and back. This fine offering was printed at the Marchbanks Press in 1955. The illustrations were done by Fritz Kredel and he signed the book on the colophon at the rear of the volume. The Limited Editions Club was founded in 1929. It was the creation of George Macy. Its purpose was to create very high quality versions of the classics that were also illustrated by the finest contemporary artists. All Limited Edition Club books are hand signed by the illustrators with a short description of the making of the book on the colophon in the rear of the volume. Only a few were published without a signature because the illustrator had passed away before publication. All LEC books come with a fine decorative slipcase and the great majority of them contain original fine art within. They are finely constructed books printed by the best printers and on fine paper. They are highly collectible.
