Bookseller or owner's stamp on endpapers. "Stanley-Gordon-Jack Schultze Bros. 48th and Broadway." Prior owner's name on front flyleaf "Gordon Schultz 4717 West Broadway." The frontis is detached but present. Pages xii - xiii have smudging. Text is toned, with occasional foxing. Illustrated with full-page plates.

The author's husband was an Indian agent at Ft. Winnebago, arriving there in 1830. An important work on the American Indian, which also includes much on the early days of Chicago, including the Chicago Massacre of 1812.
