First Edition
Octavo, pp. [1-8] [1] 2-203 [204: blank], frontispiece, original pictorial blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black. First edition. "Ten stories and impressionistic sketches of Western Connacht. They are distinguished by a style that is above the common, by a sense of material things -- western landscapes, sounds, etc. -- conveyed with exceptional vividness. There are no politics and but little dialect." - Brown, Ireland in Fiction 1341. Three of the stories have supernatural elements. "The Sick Call" is a moody piece about a monk called to the bedside of an ailing man. "The Shoemaker" wedges several brief tales of the fantastic into its frame narrative about a visit to the local shoemaker. "The Gray Lake" frames a fairy tale about a town drowned under the lake. Nice material, uncommon in the first edition. Free endpapers tanned, some scattered foxing to text block, mostly to preliminary and terminal leaves, else a near fine copy. (#114235).
