Influenced in style and format by Indian prayer books, the Hanuman series was run out of the Chelsea Hotel in New York, while printing was done in Madras (now Chennai), where the books were sewn by local fisherman and the use of handmade Indian paper and vegetable dyes ensured vibrant and colorful covers. Hanuman's publications focus on New York's Lower East Side and San Francisco's North Beach, featuring Beat poetry, contemporary music and film, and gay culture. A highlight of both New York and San Francisco counterculture, and an impressive international publishing collaboration.
