Book
Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. This is an early Collins printing of this Philip Macdonald mystery classic, jacketed, but NOT the 1928 first, which was in red boards in a larger format. This copy in blue cloth-covered boards in a small, 16mo format (hardcover, but about the size of a modern mass-market paperback), being an undated reprint in the publisher's "shilling novels" series, probably circa 1930 (our estimate.) Book itself is "fair" -- firmly bound and readable but missing at least one preliminary page, so that the first page is now the title page. Some early bookseller markings in pencil to said title page could easily be erased, but we have not done so. Early Collins printings of this title in jacket are uncommon, though the jacket here is also "fair" only-- missing bottom half of its spine covering and with sizable corner chips, largest of which is a 1-X-3-inch chunk missing from bottom right of front panel. Advertisement for The London & Lancashire Insurance Co Ltd to rear board and also to rear panel of jacket. Lists 34 of "This Year's Titles" (to the shilling novel series, we presume) numbered through 146 (Edgar Wallace's "More Educated Evans," 1926) to flaps, including MacDonald's "The Rasp" (1924), this title, and "Queen's Mate," 1926 (numbered 123, 124, and 125, respectively); Agatha Christie's "The Seven Dials Mystery," 1929 (numbered 96), and Somerset Maugham's "The Painted Veil" (1925), "Ashenden" (1928), and "The Moon and Sixpence," 1919 (numbered 140, 141, and 142, respectively), none of which seem to have had first printings later than 1929. Mystery. 282 pp. Reduced from $275.
Condition: Fair. London: Detective Story Club, 1928. 16mo hardcover. 282pp. Fair book. No dust jacket. Front hinge cracked. (Detectives, Mystery) Inquire if you need further information.
