He is not fond of his given name and seeks to earn a new one that is more flattering. This story was told to Howard Norman by an 82 year old Cree, George Wesukmin, who lived in a village near Gods Lake in northern Manitoba, Canada. Howard A. Norman (b. 1949) is an American writer and educator. He has lived and traveled extensively among the Swampy Cree Indians of northern Canada, and has translated narratives from the their oral tradition. Illustrated by Ed Tse-chun Young (b. 1931), a Chinese-born American illustrator and writer of children's books. For his work he has received high recognition, including a Caldecott Medal, two Caldecott Honors, multiple Boston Globe-Horn Book Awards, the Washington Irving Children's Choice Book Award, and the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Illustrators.
