Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: fine. Second printing. Small square quarto, 309pp., illustrated. A crisp, clean copy, with some gentle fading to the edges; very good. Some pencil erasures to an early page. In a fine dust jacket, a tinge sun-faded on the spine. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Lady Bird Johnson on a bookplate affixed to the front free endpaper: "For Mary Beth with deep appreciation and warmest wishes. Lady Bird Johnson." Another inscription below reads: "Mary Beth - and a special thanks to you for Speaker Foley's visit to Austin University of Texas. J. J. Pickle 10th Dist. (Texas) Oct. 27, 1991." Pickle was (as his inscription indicates) a US Congressman for the 10th District of Texas. While we cannot definitifely identify Mary Beth, given the context, we think this might be Mary Beth Nethercutt, wife of George, who unseated Speaker Tom Foley (referenced in the inscription) in a dramatic 1994 upset as part of the so-called Republican Revolution. The two politicians had not been adversaries before the 1994 race, so they may have been on good speaking terms at the time of the inscription (as they would be again not long after the election). In any event, Pickle was a longtime close friend and sometimes campaign aide to Lyndon Johnson, and was a good friend of Lady Bird's, as well. An appealing Texas copy of this beautifully produced and well-illustrated survey of American wildflowers by perhaps our nation's most green-thumbed First Lady.

Slipcase: pictorial floral label framed by glossy lilac strips over off-white with pink dots pattern used on cloth covers. Weight: 4 lbs. 5 oz. "Lady Bird" Johnson (née Taylor; 1912 - 2007) was an American socialite and First Lady of the United States as the wife of the 36th President of the United States, Lyndon B. Johnson from 1963 to 1969. She had previously served as the Second Lady from 1961 to 1963 when her husband was Vice President. She was an advocate for beautifying the nation's cities and highways ("Where flowers bloom, so does hope"). The Highway Beautification Act was informally known as "Lady Bird's Bill." For such distinguished and inspired service, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977, and the Congressional Gold Medal in 1988, the highest honors bestowed upon a US civilian. Carlton B. Lees (1924 - 1989) was a distinguished horticulturalist who retired as the CEO of the New York Botanical Garden and President of the Garden Writers Association of America. In 1970, Lees published the book Gardens, Plants, and Man. This book attempted to answer the question, "What is a garden?" It was awarded the Helen Hull Certificate of Merit for Horticultural Literature by the National Council of State Garden Clubs, and embodies many of his convictions, especially that, "Gardens may be the last outposts of reality in an increasingly artificial world; they are necessary to our very existence." Lady Bird's views echo those of Lees. Les Line (d. 1910) was a brilliant editor for Audubon magazine (1966-1991), He is widely celebrated as being "one of the fathers of environmental journalism and one of the most important magazine editors who ever lived." In addition to supporting superb explanatory journalism, he fostered fibrant photography. Indeed, the extent and superb quality of photos give special quality to this magnificent book. As New copy in all respects. A sturdy and handsome slipcase. No previous ownership markings! First Edition [no number line: presumed first printing].
