Die letzte Frage darf man getrost als zu moralisierend verwerfen, die ersten beiden aber nicht. Denn eben dies tut Beigbeder: Er spürt dem Grauen anhand des Immobilienmaklers Carthew Yorston nach, der am 11. September 2001 um 08.30 Uhr mit seinen beiden Söhnen im Luxusrestaurant Windows of the World des World Trade Centers sitzt, bevor und während die beiden Passagierflugzeuge in die Zwillingstürme rasen. Yorstons Gedanken angesichts der Feuerhölle ziehen an uns Lesern vorbei. "An diesem Morgen waren wir der Gipfel der Welt", steht da an einer zwar pathetischen, aber eher harmlosen Stelle zu lesen, "und ich war der Gipfel des Universums." Oder, an anderer Stelle, im Augenblick der Tragödie, um 10:15 Uhr: "Warte, erst fiste ich deine triefende Fotze bis zu meinem Unterarm", sagt der Dunkelhaarige in Kenneth Cole." Was in gesellschaftskritischen Satiren über die pornografischen Seiten unserer Konsumwelt etwa bei Houellebecq oder Elfriede Jelinek schlimmstenfalls peinlich wirkt, bekommt im Angesicht des Infernos, versehen mit allerlei kruder Weisheit ("Der Tod ist besser als Viagra") einen kalkulierten, faden Beigeschmack. September 1965 in Neuilly-sur-Seine) ist ein französischer Schriftsteller, Schauspieler, Drehbuchautor und Regisseur. Leben und Karriere: Frédéric Beigbeder wurde 1965 als Sohn eines Personalberaters und einer Nachfahrin des Adelshauses de Chasteigner im Pariser Nobelvorort Neuilly-sur-Seine geboren. Durch die frühe Scheidung seiner Eltern entwickelte er eine starke Bindung zu seinem Bruder Charles Beigbeder, einem französischen Unternehmer der Energiewirtschaft. Beigbeder studierte an der Sciences Po Paris Politikwissenschaft und wurde nach der Veröffentlichung seines ersten Romans Memoiren eines Sohnes aus schlechtem Hause von der Werbeagentur Young & Rubicam engagiert. Dort arbeitete er zehn Jahre als Texter und Conceptioner. Mit der Veröffentlichung seines Romans Neununddreißigneunzig (99 francs) wurde er über die Grenzen Frankreichs hinaus bekannt und zugleich zu einem der Stichwortgeber der Konsumkritik. Weitere Romane folgten. 1994 rief er den Prix de Flore für junge Autoren (benannt nach dem berühmten Café de Flore in St.-Germain-des-Prés) ins Leben, zu dessen Preisträgern Michel Houellebecq und Virginie Despentes zählen. Im Jahre 2005 war Beigbeder zusammen mit Alain Decaux, Richard Millet und Jean-Pierre Thiollet Gastschriftsteller auf der Buchmesse in Beirut. 2009 erhielt er für sein Werk Un roman français den Prix Renaudot.
