In 1829, while shooting at Holkham, Chantrey ".had the good fortune, at the very commencement of the day's sport, to kill two woodcocks at one shot". To commemorate this, Chantrey created a ".beautiful sculpture of the woodocks now preserved at Holkham". The introduction includes a good account of other remarkable shots at game birds and waterfowl. The text of the book consists of a collection of poems by forty-two authors on Chantrey's remarkable shot, and on woodcock. Very good.

Contents clean and tight, original brown coated endpapers, armorial bookplate belonging to Mary Elizabeth Littledale of Bolton Hall to the pastedown, no other inscriptions, a little toned and a few spots, generally clean. A very good copy of this scarce and interesting tale of the pair of Woodcocks shot in one by Francis Chantray Sculptor. Size: 8vo. Book.

Sir Francis Chantrey a sculptor shut two woodcocks with 1 shot at Holkham, Norfolk on November 20 1829. It was sufficiently well regarded to merit this delightful anthology of verse on the subject. A monument to the 2 woodcock was presented to W.Coke of Holkham in 1834. An etching of the monument is used as the frontis and part for the gilt vignette to the upper cover. A scarce title and more so in this condition. Chute 461.
