Condition: Good. No Jacket. Good ; No jackets. 1810 Printed for J. Johnson, J. Nichols and Son, etc., London. Twenty-one volumes, complete. Half-bound in tan leather with ruled borders. Marbled red, blue, yellow & white Antique Straight pattern paper-covered boards; matching marbling on all page edges and endpapers. Spines have five raised bands with gold decorations. One panel has red leather label with title "English Poets" and volume number; panel below that has brown leather label listing authors in volume. Remaining four panels have gold-stamped overlapping circle patterns. Text is in two columns, except for Lives. Pages lightly tanned, but clean and supple. Marbling somewhat faded on exterior; endpapers bright. Corners and edges rubbed with some chipping at spine edges; tips exposed at a few corners, and boards exposed at some edges. Imprinted bookplate for Edward Howley Palmer on front endpaper of each volume; verso of each title page has circular floral black ink stamp with name "Alfred "in center; rear endpapers have I-6 on verso. Most endpapers lightly cracked at hinges A few pulled areas in leather at corners. Some volumes have small signs of insect damage at edges of endpapers or on page edges. A few volumes have small edge dents in the covers. Three volumes have cracks in the title label; two have chips. Vol. 3: cracked behind title page. Vol. 6: hinges - joints partially broken; front cover loose at top one-third, back cover one-half loose. Back cover of Vol. 17 is completely detached. There are a few other minor flaws commensurate with age: A few pages in a few volumes have some light foxing; two volumes have a page with a two-inch tear (repaired) and vol. 8 has a scratch in the leather on the front cover, near the spine. "Including the Series Edited, with Prefaces, Biographical and Critical, by Dr. Samuel Johnson: and the Most Approved Translations. The Additional Lives by Alexander Chalmers."
