Hardback: 8" x 5". Condition: Very Good: Light signs of wear. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Cover Art: Uncredited (illustrator). UK SFBC Edition. © 1976: A stand-alone novel by Bob Shaw. 1st printing of 1976 edition. SFBC #1118:- Synopsis: In 1990 Earth suffers a short-lived panic when the approach of an anti-neutrino planet is detected. But Thornton's Planet, as it is called, is insubstantial and invisible to the naked eye - although it can be seen by wearers of the newly developed magniluct lenses which amplify light to the point where it is possible to see in the dark with their aid. Interest soon wanes as its orbit carries it past Earth and away in a wide ellipse which will bring about its return in a century or so, at which time it will pass, like a ghost planet, right through the Earth. Then, from the equatorial state of Barandi, comes reports that the Africans working the deepest levels of the diamond mines, with the aid of magniluct lenses, have panicked at the sight of ghosts in the mine passages. It soon becomes clear that the consequences of the visit of Thornton's Planet are more far-ranging than anyone could have imagined. Bob Shaw's latest novel combines, as usual, scientific extrapolation with convincing characterization and a narrative which grips from the first page:- (original cost unmarked).

Octavo, boards. First U.S. edition. "The near approach of a cosmic body shakes loose an 'antineutrino' planet from within our Earth, a sort of shadow-world which no one knew existed. It's an intelligent story, well characterized and nicely envisioned, with a highly original central notion. One of Shaw's best." - Pringle, The Ultimate Guide to Science Fiction, second edition (1995), p 430. "What a splendid mind-gobbling read this is! It wouldn't put me down." - Brian Aldiss. A fine copy in nearly fine dust jacket with light edge wear. (#106322).
