The first edition, first impression of this work in the publisher's pictorial paper boards, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. This beautifully illustrated volume describes both the material quest to turn base metals into gold, and the more spiritual quest to unravel the mystery of life, that drove medieval thinkers to the cryptic art of alchemy. With an introduction by historian Jeremy Catto, whose research interests lay in the politics and religion of later medieval England. In publisher's original pictorial paper boards, with original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, paper boards are in immaculate condition. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean.
