A MILESTONE IN THE HISTORY OF EPIDURAL ANESTHESIA. Cette publication novatrice de Tuffier occupe les pages 167-169 de ce fascicule ; elle est illustrée de 5 figures dans le texte. Tuffier avait fait une communication préliminaire sur le sujet (11 novembre 1899), devant la Société de Biologie ; il exposait ses résultats basés sur six observations, mais ne donnait aucun détail sur la technique utilisé. Après avoir perfectionné sa méthode et opéré 63 malades, Tuffier décida de la publier. Il rapporte ici de façon précise la technique opératoire, avec le matériel et la méthode utilisée. Tuffier utilise la crête iliaque comme repère anatomique : "la ligne transversale qui réunit les crêtes iliaques passe au niveau de la 5ème vertèbre lombaire (apophyse épineuse). Au-dessous de cette ligne, on peut pénétrer dans le canal médullaire." Tuffier laissera son nom à ce repère (ligne de Tuffier). Tuffier expose ensuite les résultats. Sa technique opératoire a été adoptée par la plupart des chirurgiens français et étrangers, et presque tous l'ont apprise dans son service, ou par ses élèves.
