8vo (167 x 95 mm). 94, [2] pp. With one engraved folding plate, one final leaf of index. Bound in contemporary French calf, spine with 5 raised bands gilt in compartments and with gilt-lettered morocco label, red-dyed edges, marbled endpapers (hinges split but holding firmly, slight wear to extremities). Text somewhat browned throughout, light dampstaining to plate and text in places. Provenance: bookplate monogrammed "P.I." and with motto "fortiter recta via" to front pastedown. All in all still a very good copy in untouched original binding. ---- VERY RARE FIRST EDITION of one of the earliest works on steam power, the basis of the Industrial Revolution. "In 1707 [Papin] sent the Royal Society a monograph [the present work] describing a design of engine which he had developed on far-sighted high-pressure principles. The following year he returned to London to seek support for his invention. Although Leibniz admired it and suggested refinements, Sir Isaac Newton turned it down and Thomas Savery criticized it most severely, accusing Papin of poaching his ideas" (Smith, p. 139). Papin used the engine described in this book to power the first steam-driven vehicle. Published simultaneously in 1707 in French at Cassel and in Latin at Frankfurt, this Leipzig imprint is not recorded in bibliographies. Only one copy is listed on OCLC (Freiberg University of Mining and Technology); no copy on COPAC. The Latin edition is more complete than the French for, as the preface to the French edition tells us: "It was thought right to suppress in this French edition the demonstrations needed to prove all that is proposed . . . those who enjoy such kinds of reasoning [may] find them easily at the end of the work in the Latin edition" (translation from Smith, p. 147). These 'demonstrations' occupy pp. 62-94 of the present work. - Visit our website to see more images!. Seller Inventory # 003271
