About this Item
London, Longmans, Green and Co. (but 'Printed in the United States of America'), 1930 (first edition). Octavo, [vi], 282 pages. Light orange cloth lettered in dark brown on the front cover and spine; tiny light mark to the front cover, and one a bit larger at the rear; edges a little foxed; free endpapers offset; contemporary ownership details in ink on the front free endpaper ('E.G. Conrick | Adelaide | Jan 4th 1932'); an excellent copy with the unclipped dustwrapper torn in two (halfway up the front hinge, across the spine and diagonally across the rear panel - then put together with clear tape on the verso), with minor loss near some corners, and some moderate rubbing along the spine. However, the wonderful pictorial front panel is almost entirely unaffected, and the overall impression is very pleasing. A rarity in every edition and in any condition: Georgette Heyer grew to loathe this work and three other early works of contemporary fiction (as distinct from her crime novels and Regency romances), and refused permission for them to be reprinted. Happily, we are able to offer, together with this copy of 'Barren Corn', decent copies (without dustwrappers) of 1920s reprints of the London editions of those three other suppressed works: 'Instead of the Thorn' (1929, 'new edition'); 'Helen' (1930, fifth edition); and 'Pastel' (1929, third edition).
