XX [From the introduction] The objectives set forth at the beginning of excavations at Bat Cave were to ascertain what specific pre-pottery cultures underlie the Mogollon complex, to determine the age of these cultures, and the character of the geological horizons in which they might be found. As is usual, many additional problems presented themselves as the excavations progressed. The discovery of maize at an earlier period than had been known gave rise to especially important questions, such as: What is the date of the earliest maize? To what specific cultural complex was the earliest maize related? Where was the probable origin of the earliest Bat Cave maize? What effect did the early agriculture have on the economy, arts and crafts of pre-pottery cultures in the southern Southwest United States? Bat Cave is located in Catron County, New Mexico.
