About this Item
First Edition Decorative Cloth. is is a most interesting book from Jack London of Call of the Wild and White Fang fame. This is the first published edition and it is the first printing. There had been a previous "for copyright only" printing but it was not published. This volume is in at least Very Good condition in its tan textured boards. The illustration on the front board, which actually begins at the lower spine, is still bright and clear. The lettering on the spine is somewhat faded but still perfectly readable and legible. This is BAL 11903 and all points are accounted for with this copy. The frontispiece is present as are seven full page plates and a two page map. There are also illustrations that are literally included in the textblock. The book has a very slight lean to it but there is no foxing and the binding is very solid. This is an unusual Jack London book in that he deals with the common dreams of man, such as the dream of falling. His idea is that before we were men we lived and slept in trees and falling could mean immediate death. The main character and narrator of the book professes to have dreams in which he sees himself as a pre-human cave and tree dweller named "Big Tooth". London creates a wonderful and horrifying world for his protagonist to inhabit. He works with early evolution as well as survival of the fittest. This is an explicit book that includes killing, torture, chases, and large exterminations. It is a graphic as well as a provocative novel that will have you thinking about new ideas in new ways.
