Illustrated white/beige cloth with quarter red cloth spine. Cover is in poor shape with. Artwork, title and related script difficult to discern w/o magnifying glass and light leading this to an overall rating of fair only (see photos). However, the cover art is by the renowned binder and jacker designer, Sarah Wyman Whitman. Over twenty-five years Whitman did the covers for more than 300 Houghton and Mifflin works. She was also sight after for her work in stained glass. Spine rolled. Front hinge opening, signatures intact but loose. Ex-library copy with relevant markings and bookplate on front paste-down.This is a lessor known work by the influential Maine author whose many works, including The Country of the Pointed Firs, A White Heron, A Marsh Island, A Country Doctor, along with a regular presence in the Atlantic secured her reputation as one of the preeminent American Women of letters of the late nineteenth century.
