Boris, the son of King Ferdinand of Saxe~Coburg~Gotha, became King of Bulgaria at the end of the first World War. He was an inexperienced, lonely, 24~year~old who was intimidated by the seasoned politicians around him and uncomfortable in his role as ruler. Boris married an Italian princess in a magniftcent royal wedding in 1930. By the time World War II broke out, the King had come of age. He dared to defy Adolf Hitler on the issue of Bulgaria's Jewish population and saved Bulgaria's 50,000 Jews by refusing to deliver them to Hitler's concentration camps. The popular King died suddenly and mysteriously in 1943, following a stormy meeting with the German leader. Soon after Boris's death, Bulgaria became a Communist state and has since virtually withdrawn from the world. In the tradition of Nicholas and Alexandra, this is a riveting story of a way of life that belongs to the past. It is based on previously unpublished documents, private correspondence and archives, and extensive interviews with the surviving members of thp Bulgarian royal family. Stephane Groueff brings a unique perspective to the story of Boris III: his father was a close advisor and personal confidant of the King. Groueff's own early years were spent at court before fleeing the ravages of war. He was New York Bureau Chief of Paris~Match for 20 years, and is the author of The Manhattan Project, the definitive work on the development of the first atomic bomb. Seller Inventory # 4241703
