Zolotow once again demonstrates her ability to make a common experience dramatic and meaningful. Rhythm and repetition empower short, simple sentences, skillfully paced to build anticipation. The rounded shapes and muted hues of Stock's watercolor paintings enhance the story's sense of homey security, and contrast successfully with the snowy white double-page spread which serves as its climax.
