16mo 6" - 7" tall; 279 pages; HC in orange cloth with titles in black framed with red borders. 1st US edition. Some soiling and darkening to cloth at edges, apparently the result of a damp incident. A mild, dim damp line visible in the margins of the first 100 or so pages. Consequent light wave to paper stock. This copy has had some professional restoration. The lining sheets have been replaced - though with vintage, turn of the century paper stock. Shallow chipping and fray to cloth at spine ends has been filled in and mended with archival material of matching color. A small triangular corner piece of the title page which had been missing has been expertly replaced; a short tear at the margin of the contents page has been mended. Several pages mid book have had corners creased and long ago straightened. One or two other pages observed with a tiny edge tear or chip. Text block edges a bit soiled. An imperfect copy, but one restored to a decent level of attractiveness. One of Wells' most important novels, among the work that paved the way for modern Science Fiction. Much scarcer in the US 1st edition than the British 1st. A good only example. Seller Inventory # 21543
