Used Hardcover Quantity: 1
Seller:
Clearwater Books
(London, United Kingdom)

Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 2nd Edition. Second impression of the first edition, issued a month after the original impression. 8vo. 139pp. Green cloth lettered in gold at the spine. Free endpapers lightly spotted, and printed on slightly substandard wartime economy paperstock, yet still a nice crisp copy in lightly toned price-clipped dust wrapper, with several tiny slivers of loss from the spine panel ends. The author's June 1939 - October 1942 farming journal (in 1939 Duncan purchased a West Country farm, or, as he calls it, "forty acres of weeds"). "I bought a hook. And decided to begin methodically. The neighbours shook their heads; the neighbours said 'it' ll take ten years and will bust your pocket and will break your back'. Half blind with hope and half deaf with enthusiasm I hardly heard them. I will start on the vegetable garden, for I have plenty of plants that can go there; I will colonize it with surplus autumn broccoli which are crowned. Yesterday I found England, to-day her Empire".
