About this Item
Pp. [xiv]+416, title page decoration; demy 8vo; bound by Riviere & Son in later red morocco, spine lettered in gilt between raised bands, boards with gilt decoration at centre and gilt ruled edges, the joints lightly rubbed; a.e.g.; marbled endpapers, dentelles ruled in gilt; bookplate of H. Whitfield Carhart, Jr. on upper pastedown, a couple of tiny edge splits, a little faint foxing and occasional slight soiling; printed for John Morphew, London, 1711. First edition, large paper copy. Teerink 2.(1)(b); ESTC N44669; Rothschild 2015. *With the second state foliation recorded by Teerink, although in this copy A8 (which is not present) has not been used as a cancel, so both A and G have only 7 leaves. Rothschild explains that after printing, a decision to omit the final paragraphs of A Discourse of the Contests and Dissentions between the Nobles and the Commons in Athens and Rome 'necessitated replacing G6 and G7(pp. 91-4) by one leaf, for which A8(verso blank) was used, thus leaving a gap in pagination for pp. 92-3'. This first collection of Swift's writings contains 25 works, including some of the 'Bickerstaff' tracts, two poems from theTatler (A Description of the Morning and A Description of a City Shower) and the first authorised printing of Meditations on a Broom-stick. H. Whitfield Carhart, jr. (1914-1977) was chairman of the board of Roosevelt Hospital, New York, and a partner in the Wall Street bank of Brown Brothers Harriman & Company. Seller Inventory # 168552
