Synopsis:
A celebration of a year on a farm is comprised of simple, heartfelt poems surrounded with pastel illustrations of such images as sleeping lambs, the buckles on a faded pair of overalls, and a speckled quail.
From School Library Journal:
Kindergarten-Grade 3-In this charming collection, 18 poems are paired with pastel drawings to create a warm celebration of life on a small farm. Like Lee Bennett Hopkins's On the Farm (Little, 1991), it evokes the beauty and comforts of rural life rather than its harsher realities. Filled with variety and richness, the selections feature rhymed and unrhymed verse, two litanies, and haiku. Rich but clear imagery abounds: "speckled quail" nest under a "speckled bush," evoking the shadows that hide them; skipping stones on the pond become the sounds of a banjo. Alliteration in phrases such as "lavender lupine" and "singe of old starch," and assonance are used effectively. The figures in the illustrations are gently outlined and filled in with the subtle browns, greens, and pale blues of a country landscape. Painted on soft brown paper, each picture is framed with a simple pastel line. A beautiful addition for young people who enjoy poetry.
