Five bleak and haunting tales of trauma and loss to animals and people in what was then Czechoslovakia during the World War II Nazi occupation. There's the Alsatian Brutus forced to become a guard dog at a concentration camp, Jelimánek the military parade pony who longs for his past, Cvok the war horse living with his trauma, Sisi the dachshund who has chosen her master, and the child Ka enko who loses her family. A kenazy was a Czech writer, playwright, and journalist best known for his children's books. He served in the Czechoslovak army brigade under the Soviets during the war and moved to Germany after the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, during which some of his books were banned. In 2014, the story of Brutus was made into an animated short film with documentary footage directed by Svetlana Filippova.B&w and color illustrations by Ota Janecek. (6-1/2"x4-3/4").
