A scarce copy of the first impression. A fascinating biography of Pauline Bonaparte, first sovereign Duchess of Guastalla, French princess daughter of Letizia Ramolino and Carlo Buonaparte, representative to the court of King Louis XVI of France, and sister to Napoleon Bonaparte. She is known for being the model for Antonio Canova's famous sculpture of Venus.Illustrated with a frontispiece and other plates in black and white. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally sound with some shelf wear and bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities, light soiling to the boards and spine. Library sticker to the front pastedown, affecting the externals to the front board. Internally, firmly bound. Spotting to the edges, affecting only the occasional leaf; the pages remain otherwise generally bright and clean. Illustrated with a frontispiece and other black and white plates throughout.
