We believe this to be the 1st UK Edition translated from the 3rd German edition of 1918, no reference to prior UK editions is made on verso of title page, simply "This translation was first published in 1920"s, small 8vo; first appearance in UK is also dated 1920, this copy is ex a private library and has a disc central lower spine about the size of 5p in somewhat darker red where presumable asmall label was removed; inside on the front pastedown is a bookplate which reads: A Gift from the library of the late Dr. J.N. Sugden killed by enemy action in London, July, 1944; on the ffep is the signature of Dr. Sugden; Covers a little rubbed at extrems and some colour variation; still near VG Copy ; no dj;A Popular Exposition; authorized translation by Robert W. Lawson, D.Sc.; with five diagrams and a portrait of the Author; frontispiece. DR. JAMES N. SUGDEN, senior lecturer in inorganic chemistry in the Imperial College of Science and Technology, who was killed by a flying bomb on July 11, 1944, was born at Silsden, near Keighley, on March 27, 1894. As a pupil of the Trade and Grammar School, Keighley, he came under the influence of a former student of chemistry in the Royal College of Science, Mr. Harry Harper, and after a period of study at the Technical College, Huddersfield, he proceeded to South Kensington in 1913.
