About this Item
New York: Bobbs Merrill Co., 1914 [1914]. 8vo, 329 p., original green cloth stamped in gilt, with illustrations by Everett Shinn. First edition, first printing of the first book to feature a flapper as a protagonist. Johnson characterized the Salamander as 'a girl of the present day in revolt - adventurous, eager, and unafraid who comes roving from somewhere out of the immense reaches of the nation, revolting against the commonplace of an inherited narrowness. The popularity of Johnson's book earned him the title of 'The F Scott Fitzgerald of His Generation'. Of herself Zelda Fitzgerald would later write I believed I was a Salamander and it seems that I am nothing but an impediment. This is a better than VG copy. Boards are noticeably bowed; book slightly cocked; bold horizontal inscription on fep, but cloth is fresh and bright and internally and externally a bright copy. In a nice example of the scarce and fragile jacket featuring price of $1.35 on spine, title and author in relief, and Shinn's depiction of a flapper girl on front panel. Light wear and crimping to jacket extremities, small faint pressure indentation to middle of rear jacket panel, jacket lightly soiled and rubbed, but a sharp and clean copy of a scarce and important novel, very uncommon as a first.
