Synopsis: This book enters the lush tropical world of El Yunque, officially known as the Caribbean National Forest -- the most visited forest in the Caribbean, one of the oldest reserves in the hemisphere, the only tropical forest in the U.S. national forest system, and a microcosm of New World tropical rain forests. It is the first book geared to the general public that takes an in-depth look at El Yunque. Drawing from interviews, from scientific articles and books, and from numerous trips into the forest, the author has pieced together the tale of a forest ruled by the dwarf trees that reign on its highest peaks and ridges.
About the Author: Kathryn Robinson, a freelance writer and editor, has lived for more than 20 years in Puerto Rico. Currently, she is editor of the Qu Pasa tourism guide and the "StarQuest" series in The San Juan Star newspaper. She has worked in radio, television and travel promotion, and has published in The New York Times, Caribbean Travel and Life, Travel & Leisure, and other magazines. This is her second book. Her first, The Other Puerto Rico, remains a popular guide to the island's less-traveled places of natural and historical interest.
Educated in forestry, Jerry Bauer has lived in Latin America and the Caribbean for almost 20 years. He has long been an avid photographer and has had photographs published in many periodicals and text books. For ten years he worked as a forester in the Caribbean National Forest, during which time he took most of the photographs that appear in this book.

Officially known a the Caribbean National Forest, El Yunque is a fascinating place. It has more types of trees on its 28,000 acres than in any other U.S. national forest. It is the only home for dozens of plants and animals, and its research study plots are considered ancienr for the New World tropics. Though the entire forest looks primeval, a hundred years ago its lower slopes were being farmed, for coffee and other crops. Five hundred years ago Arawak Indians worshipped these mountains and early Spanish explorers looked to them as the place to make their fortune in gold. El Yunque is also beautiful, with trails leading through curtains of lianas and streams tumbling over boulders in their rush to the sea. Where Dwarfs Reign is the first book geared to the general public that takes an in~depth look at El Yunque. Drawing from interviews with mountain residents, foresters and scientists; from hundreds of scientific publications; and from numerous trips into El Yunque, the author has pieced together the tale of a forest ruled by the dwarfed trees that reign on its highest peaks and ridges.
