Oblong Quarto (9 1/2 x 11 3/4"); block 9 1/2 x 8 1/2" as issued. Unpaginated, 18 leaves. Original black quarter cloth over illustrated boards with black and green lettering on cover. Title in Chinese characters printed to border strips of both inside covers. A story about the young Chinese boy Yang's adventures on his first day of Kindergarten. Beautifully illustrated with color lithographs throughout, eight of them double-paged. The text is written by Alfred Könner, editor at the Altberliner Verlag, after an idea and with illustrations by Helmut Rudolph (1900-1971, German actor in film, theater and television). The Altberliner Verlag was specialized in children's and adolescent literature and one of the few publishers during the GDR allowed to operate as a private business. It was founded in 1945 with permission of the Soviet Command and was the first postwar children's book publisher in Germany. The fully valid license was received in 1947. Text in German. Light wear along edges of binding with minor chips and stain. Lightly rubbed and starting after leaf 12. Free endpapers lightly browned with brief inscription on front free endpaper.
