205 x 305 mm., in outline colour and good condition. A fine example of the Matthias Quad (1557-1613) map of most of Moravia engraved by Johann Bussemacher and published in Cologne. The map is drawn from the Abraham Ortelius of 1573, itself drawn from the work of the mathematician Paulus Fabricius (1529-88). Resident in Vienna, he became university professor and imperial astronomer. His map of Moravia firt appeared in 1569. This version by Quad was first published in 'Europae Totius Orbis Terrarum' in 1594. This example is from the 'Geographisch Handtbuch' published in 1600. Philip D. Burden joined his father in the business in 1979. His interests included the British Isles and North America. He wrote and published in 1996 and 2007 the definitive two volume treatise entitled ?The Mapping of North America?. This was the first work to list all known printed maps relating to North America up to the year 1700. Each fully described and illustrated. Clive A. Burden Ltd. is a member of the following organisations: the ABA (Antiquarian Bookdealers Association), ILAB (International League of Antiquarian Booksellers), and IMCoS (International Map Collector?s Society).
