Book Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. xii, 340 pages, illustrations; 24 cm. SIGNED. Boldly signed by the author Lucette Lagnado on the title page, no dedication. Top right corners lightly bumped. Age toning. Dust jacket protected in a mylar cover. "In vivid and graceful prose, Lagnado re-creates the cosmopolitan glamour of Cairo in the years between World War II and Nasser's rise to power. Her father, Leon, was a boulevardier who conducted business in his signature white sharkskin suit on the elegant terrace of Shepheard's Hotel, and later, in the cozy, dark bar of the Nile Hilton. But with the fall of King Farouk, Leon and his family lose everything. As streets are renamed, neighborhoods of their fellow Jews disbanded, and the city purged of foreign influence, the Lagnados, too, must make their escape. With all of their belongings packed into 26 suitcases, their jewels and gold coins hidden in sealed tins of marmalade, Leon and his family depart for any land that will take them. The poverty and hardships they encounter in their flight from Cairo to Paris to New York are strikingly juxtaposed against the beauty and comforts of the lives they left behind. / Lucette Lagnado is the coauthor of Children of the Flames: Dr. Josef Mengele and the Untold Story of the Twins of Auschwitz. She is a senior special writer and investigative reporter for the Wall Street Journal. She resides with her husband, Douglas Feiden, in Sag Harbor and New York City." - Publisher. Size: 8vo. SIGNED. Hardcover. Condition: Good. In December 1963, Lucette Laganado, her parents, two brothers and sisters arrived on a frozen pier in New York City, in debt, destitute and without any family to greet them. Like countless generations of immigrants arriving in America in search of a new future, Lucette faced obstacles of language, assimilation, and ultimately the search for prosperity. 'The Man in the White Sharkskin Suit' is a memoir of her family's fall from prominence among the elegance of Cairo and ultimate exodus to the cold shore of New York in a moving tale of tragedy, tradition, and triumph.

Book Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Stated First Edition, but Number Line to 2, so likely a second printing. Signed by the author at the bottom of the title page, a rare signature. As you can see from the photos, the covers are very clean and pretty much free of wear, just a little crinkling at the spine ends. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages and nicely tight covers. The pages look terrific. I didn't see any soiling or creasing. The middle edge is deckled or rough-cut. There are no markings in the book. No attachments. And with the exception of the author's signature, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. From the NY Time's Review: In "The Man in the White Sharkskin Suit" Ms. Lagnado --an investigative reporter at The Wall Street Journal-- gives us a deeply affecting portrait of her family and its journey from wartime Cairo to the New World. Like André Aciman in his now classic memoir, "Out of Egypt", she conjures a vanished world with elegiac ardor and uncommon grace, and like Mr. Aciman she calculates the emotional costs of exile with an unsentimental but forgiving eye. This is not simply the story of a well-to-do family's loss of its home, its privileges and its identity. It is a story about how exile indelibly shapes people's views of the world, a story about the mathematics of familial love and the wages of memory and time. Writing in crystalline yet melodious prose, Ms. Lagnado gives us an indelible gallery of family portraits: Her mother, Edith, a shy young bride, unprepared for dealing with her much older husband's paternalistic sense of family and his reluctance to change his bachelor ways. Her maternal grandmother, Alexandra, disowned for making a bad marriage and emotionally unhinged by her husband's decision to sell their third child at the local souk. And her paternal grandmother, Zarifa, the family matriarch, who was a prodigious cook, slipping apricots into virtually every dish she prepared, convinced of the fruit?s magical, healing powers. It is the author's father, Leon, however, who exerts the fiercest hold over his daughter's heart, and who holds center stage in this book. His story is a haunting one of dislocation and yearning, the story of a man who lost the only world he knew and loved, and who floundered in his efforts to make a new life in the land of the American dream.'.
