The long association of publisher Ishmael Reed and Victor Hernández Cruz began when Reed sought out Hernández Cruz after hearing about this gifted teenager whose Lower East Side neighbors had taken up a collection to publish his first poetry book, a mimeographed booklet titled "Papo Got His Gun." Becoming friends, their literary connections continued with the 1976 publication of Hernández Cruz s fifth poetry collection, "Tropicalization," by Reed, Cannon & Johnson, an early Reed imprint. And with Reed, Hernández Cruz was a founder of Before Columbus Foundation, recognized for its a long track record of opening up the American literary canon to writers routinely ignored by the literary establishment. Becoming the Nuyorican poet most recognized and acclaimed by mainstream literary critics, according to Nicolás Kanellos, editor of "Herencia: The Anthology of Hispanic Literature of the United States," Hernández Cruz most recent poetry collections, "In The Shadow of Al-Andalus (2011)" and "Beneath The Spanish (2017)," were both published by Coffee House Press. Hernández Cruz describes how his poetry continues to evolve in GUAYACÁN: "English United States, now you know that I come from America, that I write about its people and fusion culture we are a mestizo mulato human experience. Indigenous, Spanish, African. Within this poetry book is the flora and fauna of America, its fusion civilization and heritage of the Spanish and in Brazil, Portuguese language. The Greeks and the Latin Romans were in the Iberian space of our Spanish ancestors, giving us classical memorial glances, mesura, that is measure, moderation, respect, courtesy, pause, philosophy, thought, don t be presentao. This "Guayacán" book is a sculpture made in words of our cultural-historical musical history, the Bantu torso movements meet the Flamenco clapping feet, Caribbean phenomenal incorporation, sensibility and the mores, antiquity reborn. We also have the Amazon forest to take care of, rivers, lakes, mountains, weather tempos from cold to tropical hot climates, and its trees. The Gothic and Baroque structures are not the past, it is all in our present and we walk upon them in Viejo San Juan, old Habana, Cartagena de Indias and many of our medieval Latino cities. We were discovered not by Spain but by two Kingdoms, Castilla and Aragón ruled by two cousins who were having sex. Enjoy the poems, pleasure yourself looking things up. Reading poetry is a two-way street, what you make of what is coming at you: creative reading, discover mental bohíos and castles of marble, our balconies of transported Sevilla and Córdoba, enjoy America, where the Amazon upholds our breath, adore nature and its growth. Give the trees water." Ishmael Reed Publishing is offering "Guayacan" at a discount of one third off of the cover price of $30.
