In fact, it comes from the opening line of a Byzantine ode (one of the Anacreontea), a little jeu d'esprit which provides the raison d'être for this study. Fifty years ago (in 1959) Oxford University Press published a volume called 'Ad Pyrrham', which it described as 'a polyglot collection of translations of Horace's Ode to Pyrrha' . The present anthology is rather more modest: fewer than forty versions in only four languages (Greek, Latin, French, and English) of a much less familiar poem, by an unknown poet, which has, however, attracted some prominent names, including Ronsard, Spenser, Herrick, and Queen Elizabeth I .
