Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. This fascinating photoessay has no publication data in English, although the text is both in English and Japanese. It looks quite recent, and is probably self-published. The author is a photographer, and this book documents a Kyoto folk ritual, held yearly on August 16th and named Daimonji Gozan Okuribi. Its origins are not known, but the ritual has been performed for hundreds of years. It involves setting five elaborate bonfires on five mountains surrounding the city, to give light to the spirits of ancestors who have visited their family homes and are now returning to heaven. This book documents every phase of the process with clear, colorful photographs. There are no signs of prior use or wear.
