About this Item

Meyer, Willy (1858-1932). The progress of cystoscopy in the last three years. Offprint from The New York Medical Journal (Jan. 30, 1892). 57pp. 177 x 123 mm. Original printed wrappers (trimmed) laid down on boards, cloth backstrip with handwritten paper label. Presented by the author to Howard A. Kelly (1858-1943), with Meyer's inscription (a little trimmed) on the front wrapper: "Dr. Howard A. Kelly with best compts of the author." Kelley's ownership stamp on the inside front cover. First Edition, Offprint Issue. The German-born surgeon Willy Meyer was responsible for a number of surgical innovations: he was the first in America to demonstrate the advantages of the Trendelenberg position in abdominal and gynecological surgery (1884); he introduced cystoscopy (endoscopy of the bladder) in 1887; in 1895 he demonstrated the Casper Scope, which was the first instrument to allow catheterization of the ureters; and in 1897 he used the Casper Scope to perform the first uteral catheterization. Meyer presented this copy of his paper on cystoscopy to gynecologist Howard A. Kelly, one of the "Four Founders" of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, who had developed his own cysto-urethroscope for use in female patients. Engel, "Development of the modern cystoscope: An illustrated history," MedScape CME (internet source). "Casper's ureter-cystoscope," Medical Record 48 (1895): 744. Bookseller Inventory # 40841
