Hirst was the editor of The Economist and Merriman was a prominent political figure and the last Prime Minister of the Cape Colony before Union in 1910. Ex-university library with usual labels, stamps, pockets etc. University bookplate to front pastedown. Gilt titling to upper board. Boards rubbed. Corners sl. bumped. Spine rebacked with navy blue tape. Crack at half-title but not affecting binding. Contents undiscoloured and unmarked but sl. foxing to publisher's September 1911 catalogue at back. 735pp. Seller Inventory # 002071
