Synopsis

Elsschots debuutroman (1913) beschrijft de bewoners van een derderangs familiepension in Parijs. In interviews benadrukte Elsschot maar al te graag het autobiografische karakter ervan ('Die onsympathieke jonge Duitser uit mijn eerste boek was ik zelf') en het feit dat hij het 'spontaan' en 'zonder erbij na te denken noch iets te compliceren' had geschreven. Maar wie Villa des Roses leest ziet meteen de literaire verfijning. Elsschot: 'Ik schrijf enkel en alleen om klassiek proza voort te brengen, dat mooi is en mooi zal blijven.'
