He was a French aristocrat and Count who played a role in the intrigues of the first half of the 17th century, and was also a memoir-writer. Memoires was published posthumously in 1663. Memoires de M.L.D.R was written by Francois de la Rochefoucauld (1613-1680). Rochefoucauld was a French moralist and author of maxims and memoirs. He is part of the movement of classicism and best known for his maxims. His maxims focused on the merciless nature of human conduct, with a cynical attitude towards virtuosity and avowals of affection, friendship, love and loyalty. Memoires de M.L.D.R are of high interest and literary merit. Discours Merveilleux De la vie, Actions & Deportemens de la Reyne Catherine de Medicis is attributed to Henri Estienne, Théodore de Bèze, Jean de Serre, Pierre Pithou or Innocent Gentillet but without any proof or certainty. The black legend of Queen Catherine has its roots in this pamphlet which tends to show that all her actions aim to destroy the kingdom of France with, first and foremost, the responsibility for Saint Bartholomew's Day.
