Fine restoration: modern spine & original Cambridge boards, no pagination, 8 x 5", 8vo. In fair condition. Original boards normally scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at corners. Head and tail of modern spine lightly rubbed; gilt lettering bright and clean. Previous ownership bookplate found on front paste-down: "Maurice Robert des Marais." White binder's tape found in front and rear gutters. Previous ownership signature, in ink, found on front end-page: "Tho. Vira(?)" & "Humphrey Hyde." Light toning throughout text-block; mostly at edges of leaves. Some sparse instances of light age-staining or finger-soiling. Restored binding tight and intact. Richard Neve (?- 1764) was a compiler of several handbooks including Arts Improvement (1703) and The Merry Companion; or Delights for the Ingenious (1716), the first book in English in which the concept of the Double Lift was described. First published in 1703, it was reprinted with additional material in 1726. It was the first builder's dictionary in English and an important book in the history of the development of vernacular architecture. The work was heavily used in colonial America.
