Complete work with all plates/examples, 150 p., fine & modern half-leather marbled binding measuring 9.5 x 8", large 8vo. In good condition. Modern binding lightly rubbed at edges, corners & hinges, but otherwise remains clean and intact. Previous ownership bookplate found on fresh front paste-down: "Maurice Robert des Marais." Light toning around edges of title page; some ink stains found at top corner & around tail of gutter (text remains legible). Sparse age-staining throughout text-block; with some pencil marginalia. Jean Dubreuil, also known as Jean Du Breuil (1602 1670), was a French mathematician, music theorist, writer and essayist. Son of the bookseller Claude Du Breuil, he continued his father's profession until he joined the Society of Jesus. He lived for a long time in Rome where he studied architecture. He is known for his work about the theory and practice of perspective. Ephraim Chambers (c. 1680 1740) was an English writer and encyclopaedist, who is primarily known for producing the Cyclopaedia, or an Universal Dictionary of Arts and Sciences. Chambers' Cyclopædia is known as the original source material for the French Encyclopédie that started off as a translation of Cyclopædia. Chambers worked on translating other works in French on perspective and chemistry from 1726 to 1727, including the Practice of Perspective from the French of Jean Dubreuil. Fine modern binding.
