Full leather binding measures 7.5 x 5 , 8vo. Provenance of Vermont Senator James Houghton Phelps. In fair condition. Front board attached via ONE PIECE OF CORDING ONLY - VERY FRAGILE. Boards are normally scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at corners; rear board exhibits loss at top edge. Head and tail of spine lacking (including headbands); spine moderately chipped with loss of leather & exposed binding. Old-hand ink marginalia on front paste-down & rear end-page: "John B. Brown". Bookplate on front paste-down: "James H. Phelps, West Townshend, Vermont". Toning and scattered age-staining throughout text-block. Some scattered instances of dampness staining. James Houghton Phelps (1817-1893) was born in Townshend, Vermont, the son of Charles (1781-1854) and Elizabeth Houghton (1793-1872) Phelps. He graduated from Middlebury College in 1835, and read law at his father's law office. He was admitted to the Windham County bar in 1839, and was appointed register of probate for the district of Westminster in 1842, continuing until 1846, when he was elected assistant judge of the Windham County Court. He was elected as a Vermont state representative and senator for several terms between 1848 and 1867. Phelps married Sophia A. Robbins on 7 November 1844 and lived in his father's house in West Townshend, after his parents had moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. He was involved in the study of history, and particularly of early Vermont history, the history of Windham County, and of local towns.
