Excellentcondition with later hand colouring.Hogarth engraved these plates at the outbreak of the Seven Years War when, early in 1756 French troops were massing at Le Havre and Brest, in preparation for an invasion. The scare was forgotten by November after Hawkeand#8217;s destruction of the French fleet at Quiberon. Intended as morale boosters, the engravings show the supposed differences in lifestyle between the French and the English. In France plate and#8216;aand#8217;, the scene is the coast of France with troops loading onto a ship for the invasion of England. In the foreground a Catholic monk tests the edge of a headsmanand#8217;s axe, which he has taken from an executionerand#8217;s sled filled with gruesome instruments of torture and a Plan pour un Monastre dans Black Friars a Londre. Behind him are a group of skinny, ragged French soldiers shouldering their muskets, one of whom is cooking frogs spitted on his sword, over a small fire. The inn sign is Soupe Meagre a la Sabot Royal. Plate and#8216;band#8217; England is a complete contrast. Here, outside the Duke of Cumberland inn, where beef is Roast Boiland#8217;d every Day, a group of plump, well dressed soldiers drink beer, smoke their pipes, make merry with two pretty chambermaids, and draw an obscene caricature of King Louis holding a gibbet on the pub wall. The table overflows with food and drink and a copy of Thomas Arneand#8217;s recently written Rule Britannia, a small drummer boy plays his pipe, a boy stands on tiptoe while being measured by a recruiting sergeant, and the militia parade in the backgroundLuke Sullivan (1705 - 1771) was a London-based Irish engraver and miniature painter. He was supported in his early career by the Duke of Beaufort, his father having worked for the Duke as a groom. His best known works were completed as an assistant to William Hogarth, though Hogarth was reputed to have had difficulty working with Sullivan, owing to the latter's erratic behaviour and frequent absences. Later in his career he worked on engravings of various British views, including that of Stonehenge for Grose's 'Antiquities of England and Wales,' as well as having some success as a miniaturist with the Society of Artists.William Hogarth (1697 - 1764) was born in London, the son of an unsuccessful schoolmaster and writer from Westmoreland. After apprenticeship to a goldsmith, he began to produce his own engraved designs in about 1710. He later took up oil painting, starting with small portrait groups called conversation pieces. He went on to create a series of paintings satirising contemporary customs, but based on earlier Italian prints, of which the first was The Harlot's Progress (1731), and perhaps the most famous The Rake's Progress. His engravings were so plagiarised that he lobbied for the Copyright Act of 1735, commonly referred to as 'Hogarth's Act,' as a protection for writers and artists. During the 1730s Hogarth also developed into an original painter of life-sized portraits, and created the first of several history paintings in the grand manner.
